What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a technique where a thin, solid needle is inserted into the skin at specific points on the body. It is a traditional medical treatment originating in China where it has been used for 2500 years. In North America, its use has increased dramatically for treating a variety of conditions. University-based research studies are showing acupuncture is of significant benefit in treating many different injuries and disabilities.
Does it really work? How?
For many people – yes! Research has shown a connection between nerves and acupuncture points on the body. Studies show these acupuncture points have a slightly lower electrical charge, meaning they are the most likely areas on the body to decrease the sensitivity of the nervous system. The patient experiences this decreased sensitivity as a reduction in their pain. Acupuncture can also help release trigger points and promote relaxation.
What about safety?
Cornerstone only uses sterile, single-use needles for every acupuncture application. If you are pregnant or are a haemophiliac, acupuncture requires extra caution. Possible side effects include minimal bleeding at the site of insertion and slight bruising.
Is it painful?
Acupuncture produces little, if any, pain. Most patients report minimal discomfort and are usually quite relaxed during treatment. The typical sensations reported during treatment include warmth, pressure, tingling, and occasionally, a very mild dull ache.
How long does it take to work?
This varies from person to person. Some patients report immediate relief with the very first treatment, and a few may not have any response to repeated treatments. Generally, a patient will experience the greatest benefit over a course of 4-8 acupuncture sessions.
